Ed Ruggero Website Realign
For the last 6 weeks I’ve been engaged in a project that I am really excited to be launching today. A long time client, Ed Ruggero, a public speaker and leadership consultant, approached me some time back to do some minor updates to his website.
I’ve been working with Ed on a regular basis over the last 4 or 5 years and when he approached me to make some small tweaks to his four year old website, I gave him my honest opinion about the current state of his site. I was the one that originally built it and I want to continue to be proud of it. So I imagined it was my own site and offered up a complete overhaul of the code and design to make the site have another 4 years of potential life.
He was more than willing to take my suggestions and off we started on a ‘realignment’.
Considerations & Technical guidelines
The major considerations for the new build would be to:
- Give it a more modern, inviting look.
- Optimize it for delivery on mobile devices
- Update some of the content
Technically, I wanted to be able to deliver the site to as many browsers and devices as humanly possible and be proud of the final code. So my personal guidelines going in where:
- Don’t over-engineer it
- Start with the html5 boilerplate as my basis
- Deliver everything as static html
- Use media queries and responsive layouts
- Don’t get sloppy with the code
Given a 6 week turnaround and about 30 working hours on the project, I’m happy to say that it couldn’t have gone any better.
